Strong Support from NHS Bodies as Pharmacy Show Increases Clinical Focus
NHS bodies are using the Pharmacy Show platform to communicate with community pharmacists as the event increases its clinical focus.
Among the NHS bodies participating in the show for the first time in 2010 is the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).
The NICE issues guidance that sets standards for quality care in the NHS. It uses independent evidence and expert advice to produce guidance on the best way to treat different diseases and conditions, including which drugs the NHS should use.
A NICE spokesman said participating in the Pharmacy Show was important and very timely. “Pharmacists’ increasingly important role in medicines reconciliation and the development of Patient Access Schemes mean that now - more than ever - the pharmacy community is a key stakeholder in NICE’s work.”
NICE produces public health guidance on a wide range of topics, from helping people quit smoking to advising mums-to-be about the importance of managing their weight during pregnancy. “This means our guidance is directly relevant to both hospital pharmacists and community pharmacists providing frontline healthcare in neighbourhoods around the UK,” said the spokesperson.
The increased presence of the NHS comes at a time when the show is deepening its CPD-accredited clinical content through its conference and seminar programmes. One key clinical stream will be delivered through the Pharmacy Services Forum – a two-day conference focussed on different therapy areas around MURs and commissioned services.
The NHS Prescription Service will be present at the 2010 after a successful experience last year. It allowed them to meet with pharmacists to discuss prescription payments, administration and dispensary visits.
Elaine Metcalf of the Client and Customer Services department said: “The Pharmacy Show allows us to discuss on a one-to-one basis with our customers their concerns/issues with the service we provide.”
Meanwhile, NHS Connecting for Health returns to the show again in 2010 and will be advising pharmacists on maximising the benefits of EPS Release 2. Connecting for Health will run a workshop which will raise awareness of some of the changes that will be introduced with EPS Release 2 and to examine some of the business processes in more detail.
Other sector bodies with a strong presence at the show include The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) also has a strong presence at the show to help advise pharmacists on products and its online bulletin service.
Meanwhile the Pharmacy Show has teamed up with the Education for Health, a the UK’s leading education charity for health professionals working with patients with long term conditions to deliver clinical seminars in key therapy areas.
