Pharmacy technicians are integral members of pharmacy teams across the sectors, delivering pharmacy and healthcare services. This has never been more evident than throughout the pandemic, where we saw the profession stepping up into enhanced roles, supporting in areas such as medicines administration, preparation of injectable medicines in clinical areas and in all stages of the vaccination programme. Sadly, the most recent community pharmacy workforce survey data showed a 44% drop in trainee pharmacy technician placements in community pharmacy since the last survey, carried out in 2017. It is therefore vital that we understand the barriers to training, employing, and developing the pharmacy technician profession in this sector, so that we can begin to address these challenges and support community pharmacy employers in recognising the benefits of utilising the knowledge and skills of pharmacy technicians within their teams, and identifying opportunities to grow this workforce.
