Service innovation through pharmacy workforce transformation: medicines optimisation in special schools
This session explores how innovative pharmacy workforce models can drive impactful service transformation for children with special educational needs. Drawing on an award-winning programme in Kent and Medway, recipient of the 2022 HSJ Patient Safety Award, Nirusha Govender shares practical insights into co-designing medicines optimisation services that are clinically effective, inclusive, and scalable. Delegates will learn how targeted pharmacy roles, multi-agency collaboration, and system-wide workforce planning can bridge gaps in care, improve patient safety, and reduce health inequalities. The session will highlight strategies for embedding sustainable models within integrated care systems while advancing the pharmacy profession to better serve vulnerable populations.
- By the end of this session, delegates will be able to:
- 1. Understand the role of pharmacy workforce transformation in delivering innovative, person-centred care for children with complex needs in special school settings.
- 2. Explore how integrated, multi-agency collaboration can enhance medicines safety and access in under-served populations.
- 3. Identify key enablers for designing, implementing, and sustaining award-winning pharmacy-led services within Integrated Care Systems (ICS).
- 4. Evaluate the impact of workforce planning, advanced clinical roles, and system leadership in reducing health inequalities.
- 5. Apply practical insights from a nationally recognised case study to drive medicines optimisation and service improvement in their own settings.
