AI in pharmacy: join the PDA at The Pharmacy Show

Artificial intelligence is changing pharmacy practice, raising important questions about oversight, responsibility and patient safety.
The PDA will be at The Pharmacy Show 2026 at the NEC Birmingham, where Professor Mark DasGupta, Director of Professional Development at the PDA, will lead a session titled AI in Pharmacy: Who is really accountable?
The session takes place in the Technology & Digital Health Theatre on Sunday 11 October, from 10.30 am to 11 am. It will consider where AI can support practice, where its limitations must be challenged, and why pharmacist oversight remains essential.
The session will draw on the PDA’s new AI professional guidance series, which supports pharmacists to understand the opportunities, limitations and responsibilities associated with artificial intelligence, including:
- where AI is already being used in healthcare and pharmacy workflows
- the risks linked to data quality, bias, system limitations and automation bias
- professional accountability, oversight, governance and liability considerations
- how pharmacists can apply a Professional-in-the-Loop approach
- practical steps to use AI safely while protecting patients and professional standards
The PDA’s position is clear, AI can inform practice, but it cannot take responsibility for decisions made in practice. Pharmacists must retain active oversight when using AI-enabled systems.
Maintaining professional accountability
As AI becomes more embedded in pharmacy systems, patient interactions and documentation tools, pharmacists may face a growing gap between professional responsibility and system control. The session will help pharmacists identify practical safeguards and consider how AI should be governed in pharmacy practice.
In advance of the session, the PDA is inviting members to read the guidance and complete a short survey. Feedback will inform the PDA’s policy, guidance and engagement work, helping keep the pharmacist voice central as AI develops.
