Why dispensers, pharmacists and pharmacies need accountants; the impacts from changes to tax legislation through to emerging AI tools!

Why dispensers, pharmacists and pharmacies need accountants; the impacts from changes to tax legislation through to emerging AI tools!

Running a pharmacy or working as a dispenser or pharmacist involves much more than patient care. Managing payroll, tax returns, cash flow and business growth can quickly become complex and time-consuming.

For pharmacy owners, an accountant can maintain accurate records, manage VAT and corporation tax, prepare accounts, control costs and provide insight into profitability. They can also support you when purchasing a pharmacy, expanding services, employing staff or planning a sale.

Recent accounting and tax changes make specialist advice even more valuable. Making Tax Digital (MTD) is being phased in for Income Tax Self-Assessment, requiring many self-employed professionals to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates. Where applicable, IFRS 16 can require qualifying lease commitments—such as premises or equipment leases—to be recognised on the balance sheet, affecting reported assets, liabilities and performance, which is especially important for Pharmacy owners. For contractors and locums working through companies or agencies, IR35 rules may determine whether income should be taxed similarly to employment.

AI and digital tools can also help pharmacists work more efficiently. Integrated pharmacy systems can reduce repetitive administration, improve stock forecasting, highlight potential shortages and support prescription workflow. AI-assisted tools may help with patient communications, medication reminders and identifying patterns for professional review—but they should complement, not replace, a pharmacist’s clinical judgement, privacy obligations and human oversight.

An accountant can help you navigate these obligations, claim legitimate expenses, meet deadlines and use digital records effectively. At Accountants for Professionals & Businesses (AfPB) Ltd, pharmacy professionals—and especially locum pharmacists—are our largest customer base. We understand that every client is unique and work with you at every stage. Contact us today!
