Nemonic Dot: A New Approach to Accessible Medication Information

Nemonic Dot: A New Approach to Accessible Medication Information
Nemonic Dot helps pharmacy teams produce personalised Braille labels on demand, giving blind patients greater independence in managing their medication.

For a blind person, managing medication independently can be more complicated than collecting a prescription. While medicine packaging carries Braille identifying the product, personalised dispensing instructions may not be available in a format the patient can read independently. Checking dosage instructions, confirming a medicine's expiry date or identifying its batch number can mean relying on someone else.

Access to this information matters for both independence and safety. Every patient should have the opportunity to manage their own healthcare, with the information they need to do so.

Nemonic Dot offers pharmacy teams a practical way to help make this possible.

Making personalised Braille labelling easier

Developed by Mangoslab and distributed globally by Dot Inc., Nemonic Dot is a portable Braille label printer that converts text into Braille through a mobile application and prints tactile, self-adhesive labels on demand.

Pharmacy teams can produce labels quickly, without needing to learn Braille or use specialist Braille transcription equipment.

This offers a practical option for providing additional medication information in Braille, including relevant dispensing instructions, expiry dates and batch numbers according to the patient's needs and pharmacy procedures. Labels can be used on suitable surfaces, such as medication bags, in line with applicable labelling requirements.

The benefit extends beyond the dispensing counter. By making personalised information available in Braille, pharmacy teams can help blind patients identify their medication and access important instructions more independently, without always having to ask family members, carers or others for assistance.

Supporting safer, more independent patient care

Accessible medication information supports privacy, confidence and independence. It gives blind patients a greater opportunity to take an active role in managing their treatment and to access important information without relying on others.

For pharmacies, Nemonic Dot provides another option for supporting patients with sight loss. Its compact, wireless design makes it suitable for consideration in community pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and other healthcare settings.

Braille labels should complement existing medicine packaging and dispensing information, not replace or obscure required labelling. Pharmacy teams should ensure that their use follows applicable medicines requirements and established safety procedures.

International recognition

In 2026, Nemonic Dot received five major international awards and accolades, including TIME's Best Inventions of 2026 in the Accessibility category, alongside the CES 2026 Best of Innovation Award, Red Dot Design Award, iF Design Award and International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA).

These recognitions highlight the innovation behind Nemonic Dot and its potential to make Braille labelling more practical in everyday settings.
