How Pharmacy Teams Can Better Welcome and Support Locum Colleagues
Locums are often the difference between a pharmacy opening its doors or not. Yet the experience of stepping into an unfamiliar team, for a single shift or a short run of days, can vary enormously. How well a locum is welcomed and supported often shapes both the quality of that day's care and whether they choose to return.
For contractors and their teams, small operational choices make a disproportionate difference: a clear handover of key information, an introduction to the team rather than a hurried start, and someone available to answer questions when something unfamiliar comes up. These are not complex changes, but they require intention - treating locum integration as part of the working culture, not an afterthought squeezed in around a busy day.
This is a theme Locate a Locum's CEO, Jonny Clarke, will explore alongside Shilpa Shah, CEO of Community Pharmacy North East London, in a session on how contractors and their teams can better support and welcome locums into their pharmacy.
As the sector leans further on flexible staffing to meet growing demand, getting this right isn't just good practice - it's increasingly central to how pharmacies operate day to day.
Locate a Locum is exhibiting as the Official Workforce Partner at Stand E20 at this year's Pharmacy Show. Jonny Clarke's session, "How can contractors and their teams support and welcome locums into their pharmacy?", takes place from 14:15–14:45 in the Leadership Workshop & Careers Theatre.
