Sterling Pharmaceuticals brings British research and manufacturing together
Reliable medicine supply starts long before a product reaches the pharmacy. It depends on the science behind a formulation and the expertise to manufacture it consistently. At Sterling Pharmaceuticals, we bring research, development, production and quality testing together to support pharmacies and pharmaceutical partners from inception to supply.
Founded in Birmingham in 2007, we have grown from our roots in extemporaneous unlicensed medicines (“Specials”) to offer batch produced unlicensed & licensed medicines, contract manufacturing, in-house R&D and pharmaceutical testing. We serve community and hospital pharmacies and pharmaceutical partners across the UK, the Middle East, Asia, North America and Africa.
Specials remain an important part of our work. We manufacture and supply unlicensed medicines where no available licensed medicine can meet an individual patient’s clinical needs. Pharmacies can discuss formulation requirements and supply directly with our team, supported by on-site pharmacists and product quality specialists.
Our manufacturing capabilities cover non-sterile oral and topical liquids, creams and ointments, plus small batches of capsules and tablets. Liquid batch capacity extends to 5,000 litres, supporting projects from development to commercial production. Alongside our licensed product lines, we provide contract manufacturing and packaging services for pharma companies and marketing authorisation holders.
Our in-house R&D team develops and refines formulations, assesses stability and palatability, and prepares technical documentation for UK and international registrations. We have robust configuration of process equipment, full scope analytical testing instrumentation, comprehensively resourced quality control laboratories, and stability chambers to support this work.
Our operations are conducted in MHRA licensed facilities and anchored on proven documented pharmaceutical quality systems. Applicable Good Manufacturing Practice and Good Distribution Practice requirements guide our manufacturing and distribution activities, with controls extending from raw materials testing to batch release procedures.
Investment in British manufacturing preserves scientific and technical skills and gives pharma and healthcare businesses a stronger foundation for future supply chain viability. Our proposed manufacturing and research facility at Longbridge covering 2-acre, on part of the former MG Rover site, reflects that commitment. It would expand production capacity, strengthen research and create skilled employment in Birmingham, extensively contributing to the local economy.
