ENTEROSGEL is a Drug-free treatment for IBS and gastroenteritis, clinically proven to reduce the duration of diarrhoea and improve the main symptoms in IBS.
)
ENTEROSGEL is currently used as a treatment for acute diarrhoea and IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D). In the UK and Europe it is registered as a CE Certified medical device as it is a drug free treatment and not absorbed by the body. It is a type of oral intestinal adsorbent, composed of an organic mineral which forms a tasteless gel, that you mix with water and drink.
ENTEROSGEL is the only treatment suitable for children under 12 years, clinically proven to reduce the duration of diarrhoea and can be taken for tummy bugs, traveller’s diarrhoea and food poisoning in children, even those under 1 year. Unlike other treatments such as Oral rehydration salts that can rehydrate the body, ENTEROSGEL targets the cause of diarrhoea quickly reducing symptoms.
ENTEROSGEL is an effective treatment for the main symptoms of IBS-D, in contrast to other IBS medicines which focus on treating single symptoms. In a recent large UK clinical trial, compared to placebo, ENTEROSGEL significantly improved diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating and urgency in patients with IBS-D and improved overall quality of life.
Oral Intestinal Adsorbents
Oral Intestinal Adsorbents are a safe and effective measure to treat diarrhoea and gastrointestinal symptoms as they help to treat the root cause of the problem and thereby relieve symptoms. They are a drug-free alternative to medicines such as anti-diarrhoeals and are suitable for both adults and children. ENTEROSGEL is a popular OTC treatment option in Europe and in the last 6 years has become available the UK.
What is ENTEROSGEL?
ENTEROSGEL is an oral intestinal adsorbent gel composed of an organic mineral (polymethylsiloxane polyhydrate) and water. It is completely non-allergenic and contains no preservatives, additives, plant or animal derived ingredients. ENTEROSGEL has no pharmacological action, is not adsorbed by the body and is completely expelled in the stools, so it is safe for children and adults. Its action is in the gut, capturing the causes of diarrhoea and IBS symptoms and removing them from the body.
How does it work?
ENTEROSGEL works by physically capturing harmful substances in the gut such as bacterial toxins, viruses, immune chemicals and various molecules that can cause diarrhoea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It then removes these harmful substances from the gut, naturally in the stool.
A recent scientific study* showed that ENTEROSGEL can adsorb bacterial toxins, and bile acids which can help treat tummy bugs and IBS. The study tested the adsorption of bacterial toxins released from C.difficile, Shigella and E.coli, which can cause inflammation and damage to the mucosal cells lining the colon resulting in diarrhoea. Also tested were common bile acids; the levels of which can be raised in the intestines of many patients with IBS. The results showed that ENTEROSGEL has good adsorption or binding capacity for these bacterial toxins and the most common bile acids. Other studies have shown ENTEROSGEL can adsorb viruses such as rotavirus and various immune chemicals that can play a role in IBS.

Clinical Research in IBS
The recently published RELIEVE IBS-D trial* recruited 440 patients with IBS-D from across the UK. It showed that compared to placebo, significantly more patients that received ENTEROSGEL responded for the primary outcome which was a reduction in abdominal pain and loose stools. ENTEROSGEL patients also saw a significant improvement in their other IBS symptoms; bloating, urgency and stool frequency compared to placebo. 76% of all patients reported “adequate relief” of their IBS symptoms after they had all tried ENTEROSGEL during the open-label phase of the trial. In addition, taking Enterosgel led to a significant improvement in the patient’s overall quality of life.
Clinical Research in acute diarrhoea
Another UK trial in acute diarrhoea** showed that ENTEROSGEL significantly reduced the duration of diarrhoea, compared to a control group of patients who used standard treatment Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) alone.
The lead GP from the study said: “Acute infectious diarrhoea is a common condition especially in young children. Whilst reducing rehydration with ORS is an important step this does not address the root cause of the diarrhoea and has no effect on the duration of diarrhoea. We know that ENTEROSGEL can adsorb toxins and harmful substances, thereby removing the cause of diarrhoea which shortens the duration of illness and helps people to recover quicker. This may especially benefit vulnerable groups of patients, such as children and older adults.”
