AI in pharmacy: who is really accountable?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being incorporated into pharmacy systems, workflows, and patient interactions. Whilst AI may support professional practice, it does not remove the pharmacist's responsibility to exercise judgement, maintain oversight, and make safe decisions.
This session will explore how AI is changing pharmacy practice and identify the professional, regulatory, governance, and liability challenges that can arise when AI influences clinical and operational decisions. Drawing upon the PDA's developing work on AI in pharmacy practice, the session will consider concepts such as Professional-in-the-Loop (PITL), visibility of system behaviour, accountability, automation bias, and the growing gap between professional responsibility and system control.
The session will provide practical examples from pharmacy practice, including patient-facing AI, decision-support systems, documentation tools, and automation within PMR systems, helping pharmacists understand how to use AI safely whilst maintaining professional accountability.
