Beyond dispensing: building new clinical services and revenue with point-of-care testing
Independent community pharmacy is evolving rapidly, with increasing expectations to deliver more clinical services while also identifying sustainable new sources of income. For pharmacy owners considering point-of-care testing, one of the biggest challenges is not simply choosing a device, but understanding how to translate new diagnostic technology into something that can work effectively within a real pharmacy environment.
In this session, Rahul Kamal Raj from Pelican Pharmacy will share the pharmacy's experience of developing its point-of-care testing offering and how working with BHR Biosynex, an NPA Trusted Partner, has supported that journey.
Rahul will draw on his perspective as Pharmacy & Operations Manager at Pelican Pharmacy to reflect on the practical challenges involved in adopting a new area of clinical practice - from developing confidence in unfamiliar technologies and accessing appropriate training to responding to patient interest and overcoming the everyday operational issues that arise when introducing something new.
The session will explore how BHR's involvement extended beyond supplying equipment. Through ongoing account management, technical guidance, training support, product advice, patient-facing resources and responsive problem-solving, BHR has worked alongside Pelican Pharmacy as its knowledge and confidence in point-of-care diagnostics has developed.
A central lesson from the journey is that a diagnostic device alone does not create a successful service. Technology creates the opportunity, but the right support, expertise and long-term relationship can make a significant difference when a pharmacy is trying to turn that opportunity into something practical for patients.
The session will conclude with an interactive Q&A bringing together both perspectives. Rahul will address the practical realities of adopting and developing POCT within community pharmacy, while the BHR Biosynex representative will provide insight into diagnostic technologies, product selection, training, technical support and implementation considerations. Common questions will also be captured within a supporting FAQ resource for delegates.
Through an independent-pharmacy case study, the session will demonstrate how working with the right diagnostic partner can reduce some of the barriers associated with adopting POCT and give pharmacies greater confidence when exploring new clinical and revenue opportunities.
