Dermatology in practice: prescribing for acne, eczema and psoriasis
Acne vulgaris remains one of the most common dermatological presentations encountered in pharmacy practice, and its management continues to evolve. Recent updates to prescribing recommendations and workflows mean that community pharmacy has an increasingly important role across the acne care pathway. This 30-minute session offers a broad, NICE-aligned overview intended to support pharmacists working at the counter and, where applicable, at the prescribing pad. It touches on approaches to severity assessment, the general shape of the treatment ladder, OTC counselling considerations, acne in skin of colour and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, psychodermatological awareness, and circumstances in which referral may be appropriate. Two short cases are included to ground the discussion in everyday practice. The session aims to provide a useful framework rather than a prescriptive protocol.
