Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) in primary care: a new perspective for patients
In this talk, gastroenterologist Dr Imran Aziz will provide pharmacists with a practical, evidence-based overview of DGBI and the evolving understanding of these conditions. The session will explore the role of the gut–brain axis, including the interplay between gastrointestinal function, the nervous system, psychological factors, immune pathways and the gut microbiota.
Dr Aziz will discuss how this new perspective can help pharmacists better understand patients’ symptoms, recognise the factors that may contribute to symptom onset and persistence, and support more effective patient conversations. The talk will also consider the role of primary care and community pharmacy in the management of DGBI, including appropriate symptom assessment, patient support, treatment approaches and when referral may be appropriate.
The session aims to equip pharmacists with greater confidence in recognising and supporting patients with DGBI, while encouraging a more holistic, patient-centred approach to care.
