Managing menopause through independent prescribing

Clinical Theatre
2) Expanding clinical practice
This session will explore the role of independent prescribing in managing menopause within community pharmacy, drawing on the Community Pharmacy IP Pathfinder Programme and local women’s health service models. Attendees will gain insight into how pharmacists can assess, diagnose and initiate treatment, including HRT, using evidence-based pathways and shared decision-making approaches.
The session matters as menopause is often underdiagnosed, with increasing demand for accessible, timely care. Independent prescribing enables pharmacists to improve access, reduce GP workload, and deliver patient-centred care closer to home.
Participants will leave with practical knowledge of clinical pathways, consultation skills, and governance considerations to safely implement menopause prescribing services in routine practice.
